Summary: A religious hymn honoring the Most Holy Trinity
Historical Notes: The nineteenth century was a period of profound transformations in many aspects of society throughout Latin America. The emerging states tried to build a national identity while at the same time, tried to consolidate their authority. For its part the Catholic Church also experienced important transformations, and tried to adapt itself to the other changes in society. One of such transformations was the promotion of particular devotions such as the most Holy Trinity. Moreover, the close relation between the Colombian state and the Catholic Church, and the centrality of Catholicism in Colombia facilitated the construction of a national identity centered on religion. The collective reading of religious texts such as this, helped in reinforcing this identity. [See for example, Michael LaRosa and Germán Mejía, Colombia: A Concise Contemporary History (Lanham: Rowman and Littlefield, 2012), p. 63].
