Summary: A prayer honoring Jesús Sacramentado.
Historical Notes: Nineteenth-century Colombian governments protected Catholicism as the official religion of the state, and taking into account the centrality of Catholicism within society, fomented a national identity in which this set of common beliefs was a key component. For its part, the Catholic Church, in trying to adapt to the rapid changes of the period, began a campaign of reforms, part of which was the promotion of particular devotions to which larger sectors of society could be identified. Indeed, "Catholicism emerged as a central force in building a common identity for Colombians during the formative years of the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth. Catholicism unified a state that was trying to construct a nation" [Michael LaRosa and Germán Mejía, Colombia: A Concise Contemporary History (Lanham: Rowman and Littlefield, 2012), p. 63]. The collective reading of novenas, sermons, litanies and other religious texts contributed to create this new sense of belonging.
