Summary: A detailed project to transform the Colombian cotton industry, as a way to get out of the recession during the early-twentieth century.
Historical Notes: During the first decades of the 20th century, the Colombian coffee industry experienced a crisis. In order to attenuate the export deficit, President Rafael Reyes promoted different economic activities, such as mining, cotton cultivation, and cattle raising. In this context, the Colombian state conceived different plans to overcome the crisis, and developing the cotton industry was one of such projects. Although these activities came to occupy a share in the country’s exports, coffee sells raised again after 1913, and dominated Colombian economy throughout the twentieth century. (See for example, David Bushnell, The Making of Modern Colombia: A Nation in Spite of Itself (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1993), p. 169.
