Historical Notes: During the first decades of the 20th century, the Colombian coffee industry experienced a crisis. In order to attenuate the export deficit, President Rafael Reyes promoted different economic activities, such as mining, cotton cultivation, and cattle raising. Although these activities came to occupy a share in the country’s exports, coffee sells raised again after 1913, and dominated Colombian economy throughout the twentieth century. (See for example, David Bushnell, The Making of Modern Colombia: A Nation in Spite of Itself (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1993), p. 169.
