Summary: A series of illustrations commemorating the inauguration of the Nuestra Señora del Carmen Sanctuary in Bogotá, Colombia, on May 8th, 1938.
Historical Notes: The 1930s were a time of pressure for the Catholic Church in Colombia. Since the colonial period, the Church occupied a privileged position in Colombian society, fulfilling the task of educating Colombians, and providing them with a common set of beliefs. With the rise to power of the Liberal Party during the 1930s the position of the Church began to be questioned and Colombian politicians tried to relegate its influence to the private sphere. This pamphlet is a source for understanding this turbulent period in the history of Colombia and how the Church adapted to the new situation of the country. (See for example: Fernán E. González. “La iglesia en el siglo XX. Las reformas al concordato”, Credencial Historia 153, September 2002, Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango, Banco de la República-Actividad cultural, available online in: http://www.banrepcultural.org/blaavirtual/revistas/credencial/septiembre2002/laiglesiaXX.htm).
Donor Notes: Photogravures illustrating the 1938 inauguration of one of South America's ugliest churches, the Carmen, in Bogotá, on May 8th of that year. [Ilustration of Nuestra Señora del Carmen Sanctuary 1938] - J.L.H.
