Summary: The Colombian Secretary of Agriculture reports on the economic consquences of the Violencia in the Tolima Department. He summarizes the human and material losses resulted from the conflict. For example, mentions that about 40% of the Department's population was displaced, and over 15,000 people died as a result of the violence. Moreover, by 1954, when the pamphlet was written, the department had lost hundreds of millions of pesos due to the lack of economic activities.
Historical Notes: Even if it is difficult to reach an accurate figure for the victims of La Violencia, some authors have estimated that approximately 200,000 people died as a result of the political and social turmoil between the late 1940s and 1960s (Marco Palacios, Between Legitimacy and Violence: A History of Colombia, 1875-2002. Durham: Duke University Press, 2006, pp. 135-138). This pamphlet is one of the first attempts to measure the economic consequences of the Violencia.
Donor Notes: An economic analysis of the impact on Tolima Department, of the effect of the violence-quite considerable, it points out, in lost agricultural production. - J.L.H.
